This project explores the editorial design of The Waiting Years, a novel by Fumiko Enchi that masterfully captures the complexities of the Shirakawa family and the constrained lives of its women. Inspired by The Tale of Genji, Enchi’s writing blends an elegant, evocative style with deep psychological insight, offering a powerful portrayal of femininity and societal expectations in historical Japan.
The design concept reflects both traditional Japanese aesthetics and the refined sensibilities of ancient Japanese culture. By incorporating elements reminiscent of historical art and literature, the layout and typography aim to visually echo the novel’s themes of quiet endurance and hidden strength. The result is a book that not only tells a compelling story but also visually immerses the reader in its world.
